20th anniversary stone festival at the Square & Compass

The two week long stone carving festival is back at the Square & Compass pub at Worth Matravers, near Swanage, Dorset, from 28 July until 8 August and this year marks its 20th anniversary.

It is not a competition but an event for people, experienced or novice, to enjoy carving stone.

For visitors, there is a chance to watch the expert carvers turn a block of stone into a work of beauty over the two weeks of the event and an opportunity to have a go themselves. Tools, goggles and stone are provided free of charge but if visitors want to give a donation to cover the costs nobody will try to prevent it.

The event is held in a tent at the pub and runs daily from 9.30am until 5pm.

There is music in the pub each night. It is also free but, again, donations are gratefully received.

On Saturday 2 August is the annual Square Fair, when there will be music from 1pm until 11pm to accompany craft stalls, food stands and, of course, plenty of ales and ciders to try.
