Use the government's online checker to be sure you are ready for Brexit

Business Secretary Alok Sharma: "There are 80 days until the end of the transition period and there will be no extension, so you need to act now."

An urgent message from Business Secretary Alok Sharma.

Businesses face changes from 1 January when the Brexit transition period is over. That's guaranteed, says Business Secretary Alok Sharma as concern rises about the number of companies that have made no provision for the changes they will face.

He urges all companies to visit the government website and use the online checker tool to make sure they have taken the appropriate actions to smooth the transition. Click here to go to the site.

In a statement today (12 October), Alok Sharma says: "I know these are challenging times. However, it is vital that your business prepares now for our new relationship with the EU outside of the single market and customs union.

"There are 80 days until the end of the transition period and there will be no extension, so you need to act now."

Regardless of whether a trade agreement is reached with the EU or not, the Business Secretary says from 1 January there will be changes to:

  • the way businesses import and export goods
  • the process for hiring people from the EU
  • the way businesses provide services in EU markets.

As well as checking what you need to do to prepare for leaving the EU single market and customs union, Alok Sharma urges business owners and directors to sign-up for updates directly from the government, because changes are still fluid.

He also suggests you take part in the government's webinars for additional support. You can sign up to attend them here.

"Unless you take action, there is a risk business operations will be interrupted. You should also check with your suppliers and customers that they are taking action," says the Secretary of State.

"Businesses will play an essential role in ensuring a smooth end to the transition period and the government and I will be there to support you as we embark on the UK’s new start."
