Breakfast with BOHS and breathe easy this month (September)

The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) is inviting you to a 'Breathe Freely' breakfast to hear how to avoid ending up with lung disease.

In 2015, it is estimated that approximately 500 people from the British construction industry will die from occupational cancer caused by past exposure to silica dust. Another 3,500 will die as a result of exposure to asbestos. And 5,500 new cases of occupational cancer will be reported.

But most of these industrial diseases can be prevented simply by recognising the hazards, evaluating the risks, and then controlling or preventing exposure to them effectively.

BOHS is leading the Breathe Freely breakfasts in partnership with HSE, Mace, Land Securities and Constructing Better Health, with sponsorship from Speedy Services. This is a collaborative initiative to provide free information, resources and signposting to the advice and expertise that is needed to help raise standards and keep them high.

The breakfasts are:

Scotland

15 September, 8.30am-11.00am.
Macdonald Inchyra Hotel, Grange Road, Falkirk FK2 0YB

London
23 September, 4.30pm-7pm
Mace, 155 Moorgate, London EC2M 6XB

At each event speakers from BOHS, HSE and the industry will:

  • Discuss the scale of the problem and who’s at risk
  • Provide an overview of the main hazards, how to identify them and how they can be controlled
  • Offer practical advice and tools to take away and use in the workplace to help improve standards of protection for worker health
  • Highlight good practice with case studies from across the sector
  • Explore related disciplines of occupational hygiene and occupational health and wellbeing, and how they can and should fit together.
The breakfasts (it's an all-day breakfast in London) are free, but you have to book so the organisers know how many to cater for. Book your place here.
