This month (September) sees another crackdown on refurbishment construction sites by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) across the country.
In particular inspectors will be looking for: dangers that could lead to falls from height; good order on site; structural stability of buildings and scaffolding; asbestos and respirable silica dust dangers; the welfare of workers.
This is the second purge of this nature this year. In March, HSE reported that it had taken enforcement action at nearly one in five of the construction sites it had visited across Britain then.
Then, inspectors visited 2,363 sites where refurbishment or repair work was taking place. They issued 631 enforcement notices across 433 sites for poor practices that could have put workers at risk. Of those, 451 were stop notices, ordering work to stop immediately because of the danger workers were in.
The message is: It is not OK to put employees at risk of injury or ill health.
