London cab driver killed by falling masonry in storms

Julie Sillitoe, a minicab driving mother-of-three, died when a false gable end fell off a building on to her car opposite Holborn Underground station on 14 February. Police describe the masonry as concrete, but the rubble included brick and seemed to have some elements of stone in it.

Mrs Sillitoe died in her car. She was carrying two passengers, a 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, who were taken away for treatment in hospital. The male passenger, who had to be freed from the wreckage, suffered leg injuries. The female passenger managed to free herself from the rear of the vehicle. The injuries were not life-threatening in either case, police said.

A fourth person, believed to be a male passer-by, was also injured and taken to hospital, London Ambulance Service said.

A further 10 people were evacuated from nearby buildings as a precaution.

Large chunks of masonry fell on to Julie Sillitoe's silver Skoda Octavia at about 11.05pm. The car was stationary at the time, said a spokesman for Scotland Yard.

Police are looking into the events.
