A film-maker and a writer have chosen two very different ways of enjoying stone as the subject of a short film they want to make called ‘Gill & Gill’, after the lettering in stone of Eric Gill and the bouldering (a form of rock climbing) of John Gill.
But they need to raise £6,000 to get their project finished and are looking for backing. If you feel inclined to support the project, you can do so (with as little as £1) on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter.
The film’s director, Louis-Jack Horton-Stephens, says it will be about man’s perennial obsession with stone. Written by Peter Shenai, the film focuses on these two stone-based activities – bouldering and lettercutting. Louis-Jack says they “will be juxtaposed, beautifully documented, and playfully intertwined, in order to tease out artistic and philosophical questions about our relationship with stone and its place in the modern world”.
The film will follow two virtuosos, boulderer Lucy Creamer (an accomplished British climber) and Richard Kindersley (the lettercarver and maker of standing stones).
Both bouldering and lettercutting have seen a surge of interest over the past couple of decades, although they remain minority activities. Horton-Stephens and Shenai aim to produce a highly polished piece of cinema, with a craftsmanship that does justice to the crafts it depicts.
‘Gill & Gill’ of the title were not related. But both were instrumental in shaping the direction of their chosen specialities.
