Core business includes solid stone staircases, fireplaces and unique stone works that demand the highest levels of design and craftsmanship. 

We are looking for an experienced banker mason to help deliver these products. The ideal candidate will be:

• An experienced banker mason - minimum 3 years
• Have an NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualification but not essential
• Highly competent in the use of hand and power tools and able to produce work to a high standard in solid stone
• Passionate with a desire to develop personally and professionally
• A team player - understanding that best results come from teamwork.

The role is mainly workshop based at our Staffordshire works, with occasional offsite work.

As the global leader in commemoration with over 12,000 sites in the UK, Ireland, Gibraltar, Scandinavia, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are dedicated to ensuring the memory of those members of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two World Wars will never be forgotten. 

We take a conservation-based and sustainable approach to maintaining our sites and conserving our heritage estate; maintenance work and repairs are performed by our own in-house specialists. We are excited to offer this opportunity for an experienced Chargehand Stonemason to lead a small team carrying out structural maintenance of the war graves and memorials in our care, mostly across the central belt of Scotland, in the Alloa, Glasgow and Edinburgh areas, however the team you will be leading are responsible for the maintenance of all our site across Scotland and Northern England. There will also be opportunities to work with the wider works team across the whole of the United Kingdom and Northern Area.

Strong, fair and effective leadership is important in this role and there may be times where you must provide immediate solutions to problems, so the ability to analyse and resolve situations quickly is essential. As a natural leader you will be approachable, confident, and resilient, with the ability to positively influence at all levels and set standards of performance and behavior at work. 

This is a mobile role with lots of travel. Most of the time you will be working alone or as part of a small team. You will have use of a van, so it is essential you are able to park it overnight at your address or a secure parking area. The role is practical, hands-on and requires a decent level of physical fitness. There will be occasions that you are expected to stay overnight (occasionally this could be up to 4 nights a week), and costs will be covered.

You will be able to demonstrate:

• NVQ level 2 or equivalent level qualification in Stonemasonry 
• Good computer literacy using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook
• A reasonable knowledge of general building practices 
• Current NAMM and BRAMM Licences
• Abrasive Wheels Certificate
• PASMA Mobile tower scaffolding Certificate
• Significant practical experience in Stonemasonry
• Good experience in the use of chisel and letter cutting 
• High-quality handling and repairing of stone structures
• Strong leadership skills with ability to build and maintain positive and strong working relationships
• Team leadership and people management 
• Dealing effectively with external contractors and suppliers

Job Summary

The National Trust is looking for a Stonemason to join its Specialist Craft Team on a full-time permanent contract.

Based at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire, and, on occasion, you will also support other National Trust sites in the Midlands and East of England Region.

Internally you'll be known as a Building Craftsperson (Mason).

The working hours for this role are 7:30am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday and 7:30am to 1:30pm on Fridays. When working further afield within the region, we operate slightly longer days, starting at 6:30am. However, we then have Friday off. Flexibility is essential.

Due to the nature of this role, a full UK driving licence will be required. 

What it's like to work here

You'll be part of a specialist crafts team delivering quality stone masonry work, both banker work in our workshop and fixing out on site. Our Stonemasons yard is located a short distance from the main hall at Hardwick, with picturesque views of the surrounding parkland. You could be working on a window surround for 17th century Woolsthorpe Manor, previously home to Sir Isaac Newton, or chipping paint off a traditional stone wall to prepare it for new render.

What you'll be doing

The team can be commissioned to undertake any manner of traditional stone masonry work on our historic buildings and structures across the region. Typically, you will be working on anything from stonemasonry pieces in our banker shop, to being out on site pointing and fixing the stones that have been worked to paving and rebuilding historic structures within the region. You'll also be expected to engage with property visitors when undertaking work on site, including answering their questions and helping with engagement events when required.

Who we're looking for

• A skilled Stonemason (banker work and fixing) and familiar with historic buildings
• Good people skills enabling strong relationships with internal and external customers
• Demonstrate a willingness to undertake additional training offered by the National Trust to maintain and develop skills
• Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation, and compliance requirements
• Ability to demonstrate and share good work practices

Key Skills required include-

• Ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively on site

• Ability to work with instruction and independently efficiently

• Ability to understand architectural plans, details and specifications

• An excellent knowledge of past and current building practices

• An interest in architecture and design, with an excellent eye for detail

• Must be reliable, work to a high standard and have references available on request.

Main Tasks will include-

• Understanding, following, and enforcing Risk Assessments

• Monitoring Site materials and notifying Management of issues/shortages.

• Co-ordinating deliveries and dispatching

• Managing setting out and checking of all site measurements

• Always Keeping sites safe and tidy

• Following and understanding the requests of the Site Management

Qualifications-

• Industry Experience (Essential)

• Any H&S certification (desirable)

Driving license is essential for this role, due to travelling to different work/customer sites.
