Fountain to re-open in May
Reinstatement work on the Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park that opened last year and shut down again almost immediately because of blocked water filters and visitors slipping over, was due to begin on 10 January. The Memorial should be re-opened in May..
It is not the DeLank Cornish granite of which the Fountain is built that is receiving attention, however. The four-month project will see the replacement of turf worn away by high visitor numbers in the summer, the extension of the existing path to facilitate visitor access to popular features, and the installation of an enhanced drainage system.
The need for the work was announced on 11 August, when the Memorial re-opened after two weeks closure for Health, Safety, Ethical & Environmental reasons (see NSS July and August issues).
The pathway will be extended to run round the southern and western edges of the Memorial to reduce the pressure on the surrounding grass during bad weather.
Drainage at the site will be enhanced and there will be minor elements of work on the Memorial itself, including the addition of safety bars to stop people getting under the bridge.
The current management system that asks people not to walk or run in the water and uses stewards to look after a fenced area around the Memorial site will continue into the summer.
