Great Roof for Great Hall
The Great Hall of Stirling Castle amazed locals when it was unveiled in 2000 following its restoration because it had been given a bright ochre-coloured limewash, as the medieval building would have originally sported but had not done so for centuries. Phase three of the restoration has been far less controversial from a visual perspective with Burlington Blue/Grey roofing slates from Cumbria proving an excellent match for the local Aberfoyle slate originally used. However, it also acts as a reminder of the difficulty Historic Scotland is having in getting stone producers interested in re-establishing a Scottish roofing slate industry. Nevertheless, the 984m2 of Burlington slate used is a splendid topping for the building. The slate was used not just to re-roof the Great Hall but also the roofs of two turrets and a fa\'doon, and a pentis roof on an open arcade that runs along most of the western elevation of the hall.
