Haven in Paradise
Artist Lulu Quinn has been working with Fleet-based memorial masons Haven Memorials on a project that celebrates the garden volunteers at National Trust property Polesden Lacey. Their contribution is called \'Paradise\' and is part of \'Garden Journeys\', an outdoor exhibition of work commissioned by Surrey County Arts from 11 artists. The exhibition opens on 22 April and remains in place until 4 June.
Lulu worked with Haven Memorials to laser-etch eight granite blocks with photographic portraits of the gardeners\' worn boots and shoes, a reference to the \'portrait\' of the artist/gardener Gertrude Jekyll by the painter Sir William Nicholson in 1920. The stone etchings of boots and shoes belonging to eight gardeners and volunteers at Polesden Lacey whose daily tasks are essential in the daily maintenance of the Edwardian Garden there. Their footwear is etched on to eight pieces of 610mm x 610mm x 30mm thick slabs of Indian ebony black granite that will sit on eight existing pedestals against a 200-year-old wall.
Clifford Holmes, a director of Haven Memorials, told NSS: "It\'s been quite exciting to do. If it gives us a bit of good press and gets our name about a little bit more it\'s all well and good. That\'s where I was coming from. I want people, if they think of stone, to think of Haven Memorials."
