Malta celebrates its limestone heritage

Malta, where they drive on the left as a legacy of their rule by Britain, had a demonstration of English dry stone walling as part of a week-long celebration of their limestone heritage this month (November) run in collaboration with The British Trust for Conservation.

The official inauguration of Limestone Heritage Week was carried out by His Excellency The British High Commissioner, Vincent Fean, at The Limestone Heritage in Siggiewi, which brings together local and foreign knowledge and expertise on rubble wall construction.

The British wallers\' contribution included demonstrations of dry stone walling in the UK by building a \'sheep lunkie\' and a \'step through stile\'.

The week also involved rebuilding rubble walls on Malta and a lecture by David Cardona entitled \'From Field Stones to Ashlars\'.

The event closed with a visit to The Limestone Heritage by The Hon George Pullicino, Malta\'s Minister for Rural Affairs and the Environment.
