Robert Kennedy presents Fragments

From 18 July to 8 August there is an exhibition of sculptor Robert Kennedy\'s work in the Washington Gallery, Cardiff. This is a rare venture into a gallery for the stone carver and letterer more used to producing public art and individual memorials.

The exhibition is called Fragments and comprises new works created from reclaimed pieces that Kennedy has been collecting over six years.

In the exhibition, the complex surface of the stones represent a dense collection of mark-making that brings new meaning to remnants that would otherwise have been thrown away. It also suggests language and culture in the hybrid forms created by jigsaws of letters and symbols.

The exhibition forms part of a personal review by Kennedy of his public art working practices that span 18 years. In that time the collaborative activity has developed as he has made the making process more accessible to the public.

Indeed, for the past six years he has used computer technology to let others create the decoration on his work and all the complex surfaces of his public art sculptures have been entirely created by others.
