The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Louise Hyams, has officially re-opened Church Path, the public walkway that runs along the north elevation of the London church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, linking Charing Cross railway station to St Martin’s Place and Trafalgar Square, marking the final phase of the church’s £36million renewal project.
Stonework was carried out by Stonewest and includes re-used York stone paving from the site with new stone as required from Farrar and Nero Impala granite walls and steps.
The Lord Mayor said: “I am thrilled that the renovation of St Martin’s is now complete and that this beautiful church has been restored to its former glory. It is also excellent that this delightful open space for all to enjoy has been created next to the Church with a magnificent glass entrance lobby that leads down into the wonderful new facilities underneath.”
This re-opening welcomes the public back to St Martin’s to see one of London’s most complex building projects after nearly a decade of planning and fundraising.
The renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields, masterminded by Eric Parry Architects, has restored James Gibbs’s 18th century London landmark inside and out, and created iconic new buildings and new public spaces.
