Stone project loses out to concrete in RIBA Stirling Award
A new Jura limestone building in the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Maritime Greenwich lost out to a concrete modernist reimagination of 1950s/60s architect Sir Leslie Martin by AHMM in this year’s top architectural prize, the RIBA Stirling Award, announced on 15 October.
The judges unanimously considered the new £40.9million Allford Hall Monaghan Morris buildings at Burntwood School in Wandsworth the “clear winner”. It beat the other five shortlisted buildings, which included the Jura stone Heneghan Peng Architects’ £38.9million University of Greenwich Stockwell Street building, where the main contractor was Osborne and the stone specialist was Szerelmey.
John Guest of Szerelmey talks about the University of Greenwich building in more detail here.
