Don't miss out on London Underground's £250million-a-year... specialists for station refurbishments wanted

London Underground is looking for specialist sub-contractors to work with directly on the refurbishment of its stations.

If you are interested in earning a share of the £250million London Underground spends on capital projects each year, you have until 22 December to register your interest.

You will be working directly for London Underground, which has decided it does not need main contractors or management companies involved in its procurement process.

Geoff Gilbert, Head of Commercial–Infrastructure at London Underground, spoke about London Underground’s new model of procurement at the Streetwise Subbie conference in Nottingham in June. Click here to read the report of what he said.

Under this model, London Underground’s in-house SWIP team will act as the principal contractor employing subcontractors directly. There are a few hoops to jump through to become part of the team, but it could be worth it. The SWIP website is the place to start. Click here to go to it.

The new programme of works will run for five years and involve 70 stations. Work commences in the first half of next year. The promise is that once a contractor has been appointed, it will continue to work on future projects without additional tendering processes as long as its prices remain sensible and the work is carried out well.

London Underground's aim of working directly with specialist sub-contractors, cutting out main contractors and management companies, is to cut costs by 25%, as it has been charged with doing under the Government’s austerity programme.

London Underground procurement chiefs are looking for specialists to bid for nine distinct lots, each split into three value bands: up to £200,000, £200,000-£2million and projects of more than £2million.
