Welsh//Slate gets permission for Penrhyn Quarry extension
After four years of preparation, Welsh//Slate has gained planning permission to expand and re-align Penrhyn Quarry (pictured right) in Bethesda, Gwynedd, by 20acres, prolonging its lifespan by 15 years. Penrhyn has been a major source of Welsh roofing and architectural slate for centuries.
Chris Allwood (picture inset), who took over as Managing Director of Welsh//Slate last year, says he is delighted at the decision and expresses his thanks to members of the local community for their support and interest in the scheme. “I would also like to pay tribute to our loyal workforce who have been through a lot in recent months, and for the support of our local councillors and elected members in the Welsh Government.”
Permission is subject to conditions and Welsh//Slate is working closely with Gwynedd County Council and other consultees to finalise those conditions. “We are hopeful we will be in a position to start working in the extension in the very near future,” says Chris.
