Chinese stone adds to traffic congestion

Road works in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, already delayed by the delivery of Chinese granite kerbs, were delayed by another three weeks this month because now the kerbs have been delivered they are the wrong ones.

Nottinghamshire County Council, in charge of the work, had wanted rounded edges on their kerbs because they felt that was in keeping with the nature of the historic town and they would be safest. Instead, squared stones were delivered for the £400,000 project to create a one-way system.

A spokesman for the council has apologised for the delay but says they wanted to make sure the best and safest kerb stones were used. He admitted that Chinese stones had been chosen for the project because they were cheapest.
