DSWA present top award for pack-horse bridge

It has been more than a century since anyone built a pack horse bridge in Scotland - or it had been until Magnus and Veronica Linklater decided to commission Norman Haddow to build a new one at the site of an old footbridge on the Riemore Estate near Dunkeld.

Now the revival of the skills that seemed dead has been awarded a Certificate of Merit in the Dry Stone Walling Association\'s highest accolade, the Pinnacle Award.

Built of stone collected on the estate, the 3m, arched span bridge with low parapets is in the traditional style of the historic Scottish pack horse bridges.

Richard Love, the chairman of the DSWA, said: "The pack horse bridge at Riemore is a superb example of the dry stone waller\'s skill and craftsmanship. The Award panel has no hesitation in granting a Certificate of Merit.

The presentation of the certificate was made on behalf of the DSWA by Bob Scott, Provost for Perth and Kinross County Council to Magnus and Lady Linklater and the wallers who carried out the work.

Norman Linklater said: "AS someone commented recently: it looks as if it has been there for hundreds of years. That, to my mind, is the greatest compliment that can be paid to Norman Haddow\'s work."
