CNC first

Caithness Stone Industries, who quarry Caithness stone at Wick in the north of Scotland, have bought the first Monlevi Engineering CNC workcentre to come to the UK. They concluded the deal at the Natural Stone Show at ExCeL in March, at which both Italians Monlevi and Caithness were exhibiting.

The CNX/3 workcentre is part of an investment at the Scottish quarry that is seeing two new workshops being built equipped with hi-tec kit that also includes a Flow waterjet cutter and a Vytek laser etcher, both from America, one of Accurite\'s own-brand bridge saws and an edge polisher. The aim is to expand the company\'s activities, which have been principally paving and hard landscaping, into interiors and memorials. Paul Sutherland of Caithness says one of the main aspects that attracted him to the Monlevi was its solidity - it weighs eight tonnes - and precision engineering.

Monlevi machines are being sold in the UK by United Granite Supplies / Encore Products Southern Ltd and are installed and maintained by Steve Carver of Techstone UK. The CNX/3 bought by Caithness is the 420 (with a 4m x 2m bed) at the top of the range. The latest development from Monlevi is the \'Easy\' version of the CNC, which is smaller with, for example, only one Y axis motor, and has a lower price.

Monlevi have been known for many years for the edge and face polishing machines and saws. They have lately sold the 300th edge polisher worldwide - which includes some in the UK and Ireland.
