Machinery : Intermac Master 35 Plus

The first of Intermac’s Master 35 Plus CNC workcentres has been delivered into the UK. The ‘Plus’ is a 530mm ‘Z’ axis stroke for working thicker stone. Like all the machines in the Intermac Master range, the 35 Plus is made in the company’s hi-tech 20,000m2 factory in Pesaro, Italy. NSS checks the spec of the machine.

Main features of the Master 35 Plus

General. The Master range of CNC workcentres from Intermac has been a continuous success in the UK as much as anywhere else in the world since its launch in 2004. These work centres offer great flexibility and optimal finishing quality thanks to the attention to detail in design right from the start.

Physical configuration. The Master 35 Plus is a five axis workstation. There are two bed sizes available, 3250mm x 1620mm and 4060mm x 2300mm. The maximum slab size that can be worked (with a 100mm dia wheel) is 3250 x 1620mm. The spindle stroke is 3259 x 1620 with the exceptional Z axis stroke of 530mm.

Capabilities. Routing, milling, drilling, grinding, making recessed drainers, profiling, inlaying and lettering.

Spindle. There is unlimited continual rotation in either direction of the C axis and a 180º tilting A axis (+90º to -90º). The head incorporates state of the art 15kW electrospindles by HSD with a maximum rotation speed of 12,000rpm. The Z axis travel of 530mm allows thick stone to be worked.

Table. The machine’s base is a rigid structure with an aluminium worktable rectified with the tools being used to give maximum flatness of the work area for perfect processing.

Tool change. The 14 position rotating tool change allows tools in the magazine to be manually changed safely while the machine is working. There is an option of magazine with an extra 14 tools.

Control. The Master series workcentres have IWNC numerical control integrated into a PC with a Windows XP operating system interface, making it simple and intuitive for the operator and providing full connectivity with commercially available network systems and optical / magnetic supports. The PC is supplied with CD-ROM drive, modem and network card, 15” colour monitor and the operating system. A modem and teleservice software enable remote diagnostics and software updates by Intermac. A webcam can be connected to the PC, saving and transmitting in real time. Icam 3D is included as standard. This is full CAD-CAM software developed in-house by Intermac’s own technical department. The software is compatible with standard drawing formats, so information from laser template systems is easily imported.

Support. All Intermac machines have telephone help desk backing from the company’s our own fully trained engineers. Spare parts are available from their UK premises in Daventry. A comprehensive tooling department is also on-hand supplying Intermac tooling specifically developed to increase productivity.

Options. A laser device projects directly on to the work table to position the suction cups, provide reference stops and outline the profile of the workpiece. There is also a patented tool pre-setter that can be positioned on the side of the cabinet. It is connected to the operating system to update the tools’ parameters and set all the tools of a sequence using a video camera while the machine is working. For companies producing a lot of one-offs these extras can really speed up setup.
