A giant leap for Bath students in the Lovell carving competition

One of the carvings under way in the Lovell Stone Group 'Inspired by Space' competition. The winner will be chosen at the Natural Stone Show in London 30 April - 2 May.

The pictures here were taken by Paul Maggs, head of the stonemasonry department at City of Bath College. They show some of the carvings being produced by his students for the Lovell Stone Group carving competition, the theme of which is 'Inspired by Space' to mark the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing.

The Directors of Lovell will choose three to take to the Natural Stone Show in London (ExCeL 30 April - 2 May) where they will be displayed on the company stand. Visitors to the Show will be invited to vote for their favourite. The winner receives a cash prize.

The students were all given the same size block of Lovell's Hartham Park Bath Stone to carve. They were encouraged to give an imaginative interpretation to the theme.

Any of the college's first, second or third year students are able to enter the competition - and it looks as if many of them have done so.

This is the second time Lovell has used the Natural Stone Show as a public judging platform for its competition. The first was at the previous (2017) exhibition. Click here to see who won that.
