The installation pictured on the right was created by architect Yasemin Kologlu of Skydmore Owens & Merryll (SOM) for the organisers of the Marmotec stone exhibition being held in Carrara, Italy, this month (23-26 May).
Called ‘One – Into the Void’ it was the exhibition organisers’ entry at an exhibition in Milan by the magazine Interni.
Yasemin Kologlu said the piece was inspired by a visit to a marble quarry in Carrara. The overlapping of 10cm-thick slabs of marble create an 80tonne installation, with the marble ‘floating’ on a 100m2 wooden platform.
The subtle variation in colour and texture created by the slabs reflects the natural texture of the quarry, while the geometric lines refer to the artificial stratification created by man extracting the marble.
“This is the obvious sign that with this work we have managed to reproduce the sensations that a visit to the quarry gave us,” said Yasemin.
