The Lettering Arts Trust is hosting a symposium for young carvers on Wednesday 31 March, 10am to 5pm. 

This day-long event will provide a valuable insight into the soft skills required for a successful career in lettercarving.

It is open to everyone, but is specifically intended for those considering taking up a dummy and chisel, are currently college students or have recently qualified.

The Trust has gathered an impressive line-up of speakers to share their experiences in 11 sessions during the day.

Subjects covered include developing longstanding client relationships; partnerships with architects and conservation organisations; how to maximise creative / gallery opportunities; installation anecdotes; understanding how a quarry operates; how specialist tools are made.

Participants will take away a sense of this specialist craft’s business dynamics. Speakers include Gay Breeze, Martin Cook, Charlotte Howarth, Louise Tiplady and former Lettering Arts Trust apprentice Tom Sargeant.

Haysom quarry, toolmakers RH&G Travis and representatives from the National Trust and BRE, including architect Graham Lee, add their perspectives, too.

This is a chance to learn from those who have mastered this heritage craft (including those who have achieved the transition of craft into art) and turned their passion into a fulfilling career. 

The event is being run as a Zoom meeting but places are limited, so be sure to book early if you want to be guaranteed a place. The price is £20.
