Being environmentally friendly can save money, as Natural Stone Sales have demonstrated. They believe their implementation of environmental improvements at their Mandale limestone Once a Week Quarry will save them £100,000. And they have received an Award for their efforts (see NSS April issue).

Now CIRIA, the organisation trying to improve the performance of construction and make it more environmentally friendly, has produced a package to help all companies save money by improving their environmental performance.

Easy Access Environmental Management is a package of guidance and template documents, including a workbook detailing step-by-step actions to assist in the development of effective environment management systems (EMSs).

It aims to help construction companies understand and implement an effective EMS and assist them in gaining the new British Standard 8555, the standard launched on 31 March this year entitled Environmental management systems - Guide to the phased implementation of an environmental management system including the use of environmental performance evaluation.

Terry Westley of Halliford Construction Ltd, who has used CIRIA\'s Easy Access Environmental Management, says: "Easy Access has helped us to improve business performance and implement EMS, which in the auditor\'s opinion is an outstanding system."
