Hands-on workshops on Purbeck Marble follow new find

Purbeck quarry company W J Haysom have lately quarried more Purbeck marble. The dig provided considerable geological and archaeological interest, as well as stone. Three beds were encountered with some blocks running to lengths of about 3m.

A considerable quantity of each bed of Purbeck Marble has been stockpiled and some is being used for current restoration at Salisbury Cathedral. If you would like to work Purbeck Marble, two five-day workshops are being held between 31 July and 11 August. Eight places are being offered with the aim of providing the experience of converting Purbeck Marble from the raw block into finished architectural components by mediaeval methods (as far as is practical). The finished pieces will be used to help meet Cathedral restoration needs.

The courses, led by W J Haysom director Treleven Haysom, will take place within a working quarry environment and will include a geological excursion and a talk on the medieval use of Purbeck Marble. The cost is £300 plus VAT per week. Workshop space, supervision, tools and Marble will be provided. The weeks are timed so they will partly coincide with the Square & Compass stone-carving event.
