In harmony with stone

The lyre pictured right was sculpted in Elterwater slate from Burlington Quarries by Shawn Williamson and strung by Dr Andy Lamb of Oxford University’s medieval music department. It plays with deep, zither-like tones. It will be included in a book currently being written by sculptor Shawn in co-operation with historian and author Dr Andrew Sinclair, distinguished for his studies of the Knights Templar. The work of previous stone instrument makers, such as the Richardson’s of Keswick, will also be included, although the central theme of the book, called The Temple Builders, is the sound and acoustic properties of stone buildings.
