Living the high life

HAUTE CUISINE. This was the scene at the top of Nelson\'s Column in Trafalgar Square, London, as the masons of David Ball Restoration and their guests emulated their counterparts of 1843 who built the column and held a banquet, complete with live music, at the top of the column to celebrate the completion of their work. The restoration of the 46m column and its 5.5m high statue of Nelson carried out by David Ball Restoration was originally intended to be a light clean and general repairs, but when a source of reclaimed Craigleith stone became available from Watson Stonecraft in Scotland it was decided to use it to repair the statue that was carved in the stone. The four-month, £420,000 project included repairs to the left arm of the statue that was damaged when it was struck by lightning in the 1880s.
