Get chapter and verse on hot-mix lime at Coventry Cathedral, 20 October

This is Nigel Copsey, a conservator and stonemason, talking about hot-mix lime at a previous seminar. He will be talking about it again at Coventry Cathedral Chapter House on 20 October.

If you are working with stone in the heritage sector you have probably heard about hot-mix lime. If you haven't, you can read more about it here. Either way, if you want some hands-on experience of it, there is another all-day seminar and workshop being held in the Chapter House at Coventry Cathedral on 20 October. If you have not been to one, it is well worth attending.

Some of the exponents of hot-mix lime mortars have become almost evangelical about it. Which is not to imply there is any reason why they shouldn't be. Exponents say there is a lot of evidence that this is how lime mortars, plasters and renders would traditionally have been prepared and they should be again in the true spirit of conservation – indeed, they are being.

The Coventry Cathedral event starts at 9am and finishes at 6pm. It is a longish day, but it looks as if it will be every bit as interesting as previous events about hot lime, so it is unlikely you will get bored.

The performance of hot-mix lime (and other types of lime mortars, come to that) is always under investigation and the subject of heated debate. If you want to be better informed about the hot-mix side of the debate, you will be by the end of this seminar, which is being organised by the Building Limes Forum, sponsored by Historic England and supported by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

Speakers and tutors include: Alison Henry, Historic England; Nigel Copsey, stonemason & building conservator; Pat McAfee, stonemason; David Wiggins, structural engineer, Curtins; Alan Gardner, chartered building surveyor; Nick Durnan, stone conservator; Richard Jordan, master roofer; Simon Swann, stone conservator; Bill Revie, building materials scientist; Craig Frew, Historic Buildings Consultant.

There is a charge of £100 to attend (£80 for Members of the Building Limes Forum). That will include lunch. You have to fill in a booking form, which can be downloaded at buildinglimesforum.org.uk.
