The mystery surfer : Beltrami

Your heart can sink a little when you hear that the sons of a business’s owner have been responsible for the website, but in Beltrami’s case Herwig Callewier’s sons have done an excellent job.

The new website went live in June and is a lot more useful and easier to navigate and understand than the old one. There are still one or two strange uses of the English language. For example, Marmocer, which is a tile with natural stone on top of a ceramic base so that larger formats are available without the tile becoming too thick, is described thus: “The top layer is marble of +/-4mm bonded onto a composite underground.” But, hey…

There are two areas on the new site, one for the consumer and one for the professional designer and fabricator.

The consumer area includes a lot of inspirational photographs and ideas, as well as products. There is more technical information in the professional area, although to access some of it you need to register, which is no great problem, although doing so does not provide you with instant access and the expected email took a while to arrive – at least for me.

You choose your own password so you can remember it without having to change it later, and a nice little touch is that when you do log on a picture of a member of the sales team appears with a mobile number and a link to an email address to contact her.

What an improvement on those ‘sod the customer’ sites that try to keep secret all information on personnel, addresses, telephone numbers or anything else that might actually help you to buy from them.

A little oddly, as presumably it is what a lot of people will be searching for, the product categories do not include ‘worktops’ or ‘kitchens’. They are covered under the heading of ‘cut to size’, but that might not mean very much to consumers. I also gripe at the lack of prices. I understand it is a sensitive issue, but people often think unpriced products are more expensive than they actually are.

Nevertheless, a good site well worth fabricators paying a visit. Rating: 79%.
