Burlington takes over production of Kirkstone’s Cumbrian slates
Burlington Stone has acquired the quarrying rights to the former Kirkstone Brathay Blue/Black, Kirkstone Silver Green and Kirkstone Sea Green natural stones from Cumbria after Kirkstone Quarries went into Administration in March.
Burlington has acquired the rights to quarry at Petts Quarry on Kirkstone Pass and Brathay Quarry near Ambleside in the Lake District.
Burlington will incorporate the Kirkstone products into its existing portfolio of six British slates and two English limestones.
Burlington says it believes it is important to protect and promote the heritage and exquisite natural resource it has on its doorstep.
Nick Williams, Commercial Director at Burlington Stone: “This is a great opportunity for us to enhance the product offering from British, and in particular Lake District, natural stone producers.
“Throughout the world, the natural stone produced in the Lake District is admired and sought after. It is regarded as one of the finest and most durable stones, which we will continue to promote to the benefit of our local industry.”
Over the past few years Burlington Stone has expanded its range of products for interiors and exteriors. It invested in machinery while also placing greater emphasis on the environment and achieving ISO 14001 accreditation for its environmental standards. It aims to use all the rock extracted from the quarries, by more careful extraction, more careful use of what is extracted and an expansion of products to use what would previously have been waste, so extending the lifespan of the quarries for use by future generations.
