Gallagher, the company near Maidstone in Kent that is the last producer of Kentish ragstone, a hard limestone used on many churches (in particular) and other buildings in kent and London (including the Tower of London), has produced a video about its stone.
Gallagher has always made the stone available as block for dimesnional stonework but it did not make a big deal about the service. Last year, after gaining planning permission to extend its quarry, it recruited Vince Tourle to head a major expansion of the dimensional stone side of the business, making it available not just for the repair, maintenance and extension of existing buildings, but also for new build. You can read about the development here.
The company would like to expand the amount of stone it sells for new build, both in the South East and further afield, as well as for conservation work. It is also polishing slab, which makes ideal floor and wall tiles but has also been used as external cladding. It is exhibiting its range at the Natural Stone Show at ExCeL London, 28-30 April, to get its message out to a wider audience.
You will be able to see and feel the stone at the exhibition and talk to the team from the quarry but, in the meantime, if you have about four minutes to spare, it is worth whetting your appetite by watching the video above.
