Stone specialists Kirkstone, who quarry stone from Cumbria as well as importing other stones, have supplied 90m2 of 15mm floor and wall tiles in their Silver Green slate quarried from the hills of the Lake District, for the reception area at the offices of British American Tobacco (BAT) in Southampton.
Specified by interior architects M Moser Associates, the natural markings and range of shading adds a distinctive touch to BAT’s offices while also being robust enough for heavily trafficked area.
“Our concept and idea was to create an environment that gave a relaxed and social ambience and Kirkstone’s Cumbrian slate was the ideal material,” says Roberto Palmer, Senior Interior Designer at M Moser Associates. “We wanted to use products local to the UK that gave a warm and intimate feel to the interior and we could achieve this by combining the natural stone and timber.
“Kirkstone’s products came highly recommended to us and the slate itself was flawless. The honed finish of the tiles perfectly captured the grain of the slate and our client was absolutely delighted with the end result.”
The hard-wearing nature of the Silver Green product means it is well suited to commercial applications, says Nick Fecitt, Managing Director of Kirkstone.
“The volcanic slate that we quarry was formed over 450million years and is incredibly durable. The distinctive markings of the stone make it ideal for adding uniqueness to a project and we take great pride in the quality of stone we can provide.”
