Lovell Purbeck changes name to reflect growing range of stones

Lovell Purbeck Ltd, the name created when James & Simon Hart of Royal Forest Pennant Paving bought the Purbeck quarry of B&P Lovell in 2010, is being changed to the Lovell Stone Group Ltd.

The company’s registration, VAT and bank details remain unchanged.

The change reflects the growth of the operation. In just three years the brothers have bought three more quarries and now operate the following sites:

  • Downs Quarry at Langton Matravers, Dorset, producing all types of Purbeck limestone
  • Chicksgrove Quarry and Chilmark Mine at Tisbury, Wiltshire, producing dimensional Chilmark limestone
  • Hurdcott Quarry at Barford St Martin, Wiltshire, producing dimensional Shaftesbury Greenstone
  • Bowdens Quarry, Langport, Somerset, producing Blue and White Lias building stone.

The well established and respected name of Lovell has been retained but the reference to Purbeck has been dropped because it was giving potential customers the impression the only stone available from the company was Purbeck.

Simon Hart told NSS: “The past year has been exceptionally busy with the acquisition of Chicksgrove Quarry Ltd. A lot of quarry development work has taken place here and at Hurdcott, and we are now able to supply blockstone and finished masonry from both of these sites.

“We have also come across a number of new beds of stone at Chicksgrove which we will be promoting going forward once we have the test data back.

“One of the main reasons behind the name change was people’s perception that all we do is Purbeck stone. While this is still an important part of the business we are now processing a lot of stone from our other quarries and increasing amounts of Portland, Bath and Lincolnshire limestones for flooring and masonry.”

There is new website with links to the individual sites for each of the stones.
