THEY ALWAYS SAÏD IT WAS GOOD

The Saïd Business School, on which Holloway White Allom were main contractors and APS Masonry the stone specialists, has been awarded an Oxford Preservation Trust Award for its contribution to the city's environment. The façade of what has been described as Europe's answer to Harvard is faced with 80m3 of Bath stone, with 30m3 of York stone paving and granite plinth, stall riser and steps.

Saïd Business School is constructed over the remains of Rewley Abbey, believed to be the first seat of learning in Oxford. Sympathetic to this ancient monument, the School uses the maximum footprint, with peripheral hedges delineating the moat of the original building. This design gives the largest possible area for the courtyard and cloisters, while the main buildings have been constructed on piles and concrete slabs to protect the Abbey remains.
