German stone is a hit in the UK
Solnhofen Stone Group (SSG) are one of the biggest natural stone producers in Germany. They employ 170 people and specialise in quarrying and processing Jura limestone and Solnhofen stone using the latest quarrying technology and factory equipment.
Over the years, Solnhofen have supplied finished stone to many prestigious projects throughout the UK, the rest of Europe and the Middle East.
Two of the most recent projects supplied in London were Kings Place at Kings Cross and Abbey House in Baker Street.
The stone contractors at the Dixon Jones-designed Kings Place were Trent Concrete in Nottingham. They used 2,500m2 of straight and 1,500m2 of curved beige-banded honed Jura limestone at 30mm thick on a precast concrete system.
At BUJ Architects\' Abbey House, London company Szerelmey were the stone contractors. They used 2,800m2 of beige, beige-banded and striated honed Jura wall cladding at 50mm and 70mm thick.
Since July last year SSG have been CE certified with a complete quality control system throughout production, starting in the quarry with the selection and checking of blocks before they go to the factory.
In the factory, the material is checked throughout the production process. Density and flexural strength tests are also carried out regularly in SSG\'s own laboratories.
