Nimbus preserve the Cross of Carew
Carew Cross is 1,000 years old and believed to be commemorating Maredudd ap Edwin, the ruler of Deheubarth. Not surprising then that Cadw, the Welsh Assembly\'s historic environment service, wants to preserve it.
The magnificent eleventh-century cross in Pembrokeshire, the inspiration for Cadw\'s own logo, dates from the 11th century. It has a granite shaft with a sandstone cross on top of it in which cracks had appeared. The conservation work, being carried out by Nimbus Conservation of Frome, Somerset, involves filling the cracks to avoid further damage.
Maintenance work, 50% grant aided by Cadw, has also been carried out at nearby Carew Castle, managed by Pembroke-shire National Park Authority. Stones on top of Perrot\'s Wing, an Elizabethan extension, had become loose but were too high to repair without scaffoldingÖ or would have been without rope access specialists Ascend, who have been hanging from ropes to re-bed the stones.
