Peak District lime kiln project wins backing
A lime kiln project to produce lime mortars and putties on the Haddon Estate in Derbyshire from its own quarries has won backing from the Peak District Sustainable Development Fund financed by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. The Fund has offered a 50% grant to enable the launch of the £27,500 scheme, which will produce quicklime from the limestone in the 4,000-acre estate. Haddon Hall dates from the 12th century with later additions until the 17th century and is built of gritstone and limestone, both quarried on the estate. The gritstone has been used for quoins, cills, door and window surrounds with limestone walling.
