Portland reaches new heights

For years, customers of the two companies that quarry (and lately mine) limestone on the Dorset island of Portland have stayed in the Portland Heights Hotel at the top of the island during visits. Now, the two quarriers, Albion Stone Quarries and Hanson Bath & Portland Stone, have donated stone to the hotel so that customers can see it in all its glory as floors, furniture and carving in the hotel reception.

Portland Heights Hotel began discussions with Albion Stone in January for assistance with a reception area redecoration that they wanted to include the stone that has made the island famous.

Albion were happy to have the opportunity of creating a public showcase for the Portland stone flooring that comes off their tile line and donated 150m2 of new Independent Whitbed flooring tiles, 600mm x 400mm x 20mm, from stock.

Albion also appointed flooring contractors Hardwood & Natural Stone Flooring of Salisbury to lay the floor. The work was completed the end of February.

As well as walking over Portland stone when they enter the hotel, guests will also be welcomed at a Portland stone reception counter and sit at Portland stone coffee tables donated by Hanson Bath & Portland. And a mural in the stone is being donated by the Portland Sculpture Trust.
