PUTTING A SOCK IN IT

A grant of £290,500 from English Heritage has helped remove privately-owned Mettingham Castle, just outside Bungay in Suffolk, from the Buildings At Risk register. To stabilise the tower, holes up to 5.5m long were drilled in the flint walls and threaded with stainless steel reinforcement bars encased in ‘socks’ that were pumped full of mortar to anchor them into position.
