Readers projects : Carving

In the June issue of Natural Stone Specialist we feature some of the artistic work produced by readers, including some of the pieces carved during the stone festivals at Freiburg and Ludlow. The picture on the right shows Tom Brown’s four-sided face of Cronos, father of the Greek gods, that he carved during the Ludlow Festival. Tom is a Yeoman Mason of the Masons’ livery company in the City of London and was one of five of their Yeomen to win a bursary to pay for their participation in the Festival. The Festival itself was part of Ludlow Conservation Weekend to raise money for restoration work to the church. An auction of the carvings at the end of the weekend raised £4,300. Tom Brown told NSS: “My idea was quite sneaky, though, as it was designed as a four-sided piece and was quite square, meaning I could get straight into carving the features.”
