The Natural Stone Industry Training Group (NSITG), in conjunction with Stone Federation GB, has developed a new training course and qualification.
The Specialist Upskilling Programme (SUP) in Stone Industry Professional Practice will comprise eight days of training spread over one year and is principally (but not exclusively) aimed at:
- Industry new entrants and/or those with a general construction background needing to better understand working with natural stone
- Time-served masons/restorers/operatives progressing into management
- Architects and other professionals specialising in natural stone
Those who successfully complete this new course will achieve an NVQ Diploma in Level 3 Construction Contracting Operations Site Technical Support, which will allow them to apply for a CSCS Gold Card. Within the course will be some optional elements, including: Drawing, Estimating, Surveying or Planning.
The content of each of the eight can be seen by clicking on the link below to download a PDF.
Topics covered include:
- Basic geology

Training deliverers are long-standing SFGB members and leaders in their particular fields.
It is intended that for CITB-registered companies the course will attract grant support of £1,950 per person, which will offset 100% the cost of the course (excluding travel to the training venues and any overnight accommodation). However, a submission is being made to CITB for additional funding to support a successful pilot programme.
As part of this submission to CITB (to be made in February) NSITG needs to assess the likely level of interest for the course. To register your interest email Ian Major at the address below with an indication of how many people you would like to enroll on it.
