Stone specialist stoneCIRCLE in Basingstoke, Hampshire, is earning a reputation for artwork in stone. Having previously worked with artists as varied as Susanna Heron, Julian Opie and Rhona Smith, stoneCIRCLE’s latest commission involved the reproduction of Sasha Holzer wood panels in Portland limestone for an Emrys Architects office and retail development at 30 Broadwick Street, Soho, in London.

Sasha Holzer is an artist known for his geometric panels carved in wood. The commission to transfer them into Jordans Basebed Portland stone was received from specialist contractor Szerelmey Ltd.

The wood panels are a quarter the size of the stonework, although scaling them up from the 3D laser scans stoneCIRCLE took of the original work was not difficult. The digital files were then transferred to stoneCIRCLE’s CNC machines for the stone to be machined. It was hand finished.

The five panels on the interior of the building are 1960mm high by 764mm wide. The 18 panels outside are set between brick piers on Broadwick Street and Poland Street. They feature 11 different designs, seven of them mirrored or rotated.
