The saving of St Mel's – a restoration story by Peter Cox and George O'Malley

The story of the restoration of St Mel's Cathedral in Longford, Ireland, after a fire involved the replacement of all 28 of its supporting Irish Blue limestone columns, is to be told in London in April.

Overseeing the restoration project was Peter Cox of Carrig Conservation, which has offices in Dublin and London.

Peter, with the help of Master Plasterer George O'Malley, will be talking about this incredible restoration project at The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1, from 6.30pm on 7 April.

Natural Stone Specialist magazine visited the cathedral with Peter as the project neared its conclusion and you can read its report here. But it is a story with so many elements to it, including the stunning plasterwork overseen by George, that it will be well worth going along to the presentation in Cowcross Street. The photographs alone will make it rewarding, but you will also learn a lot. And it is always a joy to listen to Peter and George explaining the details that went into the decision-making and execution of their work.

If you would like to attend the presentation, Peter asks you to let him know in advance so he knows how many to cater for. Please email him on peter@carrig.ie.
