Sherborne quarry re-opens
Sherborne stone from an old quarry in the grounds of Sherborne Castle in Dorset is back in production. It is currently being supplied as block and split walling for housebuilding, but there are plans to saw it in the future.
The stone is pale yellow with some grey. It is an oolitic limestone. Planning permission allows for the extraction of 2,500 tonnes a year, although Edward Digby, in charge of the operation, says they are some way from reaching that level of production yet. He says the stone is a good match for others used for building in the area.
