Special award for \'glorious restoration\'

The 25-year restoration of London\'s Christ Church Spitalfields undertaken by Stone Restoration Services and, in earlier years, by CWO under the direction of architect Red Mason has received a special award in the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust\'s Building of the Year competition.

The awards, sponsored by SKY, were presented by former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey of Clifton at the Savoy hotel in London. There will be a SKY programme about the awards aired on 28 July.

The work (featured in the January issue of NSS this year) was described as a "glorious restoration" when the Special Award was presented to the Friends, rector and PCC of the church designed by Nicholas Hawskmoor at the ceremony celebrating some of the most exciting building projects completed in the UK during the past 12 months.

Newly restored, Christ Church not only provides a permanent place of worship for a growing congregation but also a distinctive venue for social and business events such as the launch of the National Heritage Training Group\'s report on skills shortages.
