The Government has provided additional funding to Civic Voice, Historic England and the War Memorials Trust to ensure as many war memorials as possible are appreciated and cared for by their local communities and are in good condition for the World War I centenary commemorations.
Up to £2million in grants is available for the conservation of war memorials. Full details of what works are eligible are set out on the War Memorials Trust website: www.warmemorials.org. There is also a wealth of information about looking after war memorials, including detailed helpsheets, on the site.
Civic Voice is holding a series of workshops about caring for war memorials. For further details about that click here.
Historic England has produced practical guidance to help anyone who manages or cares for a war memorial or a memorial garden:
- The Conservation, Management and Repair of War Memorials
- The Conservation and Management of War Memorial Landscapes
To supplement this online guidance, specialist advice and training, including online films, aimed at contractors and specifiers is being developed, addressing aspects of conservation work which are poorly understood. For more information on Historic England’s war memorials work, click here.
