REMEMBERED

One of the most attractive books published this year was Remembered, which contains the photographs of memorials and cemeteries included in an exhibition by award-winning photographer Brian Harris that were on display from May to July to mark the 90th anniversary of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The 192-page book, written by Julie Summers, is the history of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission with royalties from sales going to the Commission. It features more than 40 historical images from the Commission\'s own archives as well as 150 of Brian Harris\'s pictures. There is a a preface by HRH The Duke of Kent and a foreword by Private Eye editor Ian Hislop who, in 2005, presented the Channel 4 TV series Not Forgotten about First World War memorials.

Remembered charts the development of the magnificent cemeteries and memorials built in 150 countries by the Commission and emphasizes the importance of the Commission\'s work, not only in commemorating the dead but also in preserving in perpetuity some of the most significant and poignant heritage sites of the 20th century.
