According to the latest HMRC figures, there were £265million worth of dimensional stone imported to the UK last year (excluding slate and hard landscaping). Estimating the indigenous suppliers with sales of about £80million, stone supply in the UK last year is valued at around £345million. Once the stone has been processed and installed, the value of stone market at the client end is estimated to be about £3,225million. There are some 4,000 companies involved in the various architectural stone markets and another 800 in memorial retailing, making the mean turnover in the stone sector £670,000 a year.
