Bath stone sculptures for Chichester children’s centre

Four fantastic stone animal sculptures have been installed at Chichester Nursery & Children’s Centre this month (March). They are works by the nationally acclaimed sculptor Paula Haughney and have been a labour of love that started in October.

The visionary headteacher of the centre, Candy Daffern, was attracted to Paula’s work when she toured The Bromley by Bow Centre in east London, where Paula has her studio. Then, as soon as the funds were in place last summer for new developments at the school, she contacted Paula.

The limestone used was sourced from the Bath Stone Group at Limpley Stoke, Bath. Paula chose pieces of Stoke Ground Top Bed for her work.

The four sculptures are a rabbit, lizard, bear and bird. They are amusing and friendly creatures that will stimulate imaginative play by the children for many years to come, inviting pet names, magical stories and games.

Each work weighs just under a tonne, presenting quite a challenge in delivery and handling.

It is unusual to improve a nursery’s environment by investing in sculpture, but already it is paying dividends. The animals have been carefully placed around the nursery in positions where the under-fives can admire and play on them. They are hugely popular with children and adults alike.

Such interactive public artwork in a children’s space is a progressive move that will hopefully inspire other schools and nurseries to take similar steps. For more details on the sculptor, visit the web address below.
