Stoneform design key pieces for church modernisation

Stoneform have completed their second contemporary ecclesiastical piece for the RC Church of St Anthony of Padua in Radlett, Hertfordshire.

Stoneform consists of Zo" Cull and Alex Evans. Both trained in architectural stonemasonry, carving and conservation at Weymouth College before setting up their own practice in Dorset in 2003, undertaking both reproduction and new work. Their primary interest is in contemporary stonework design with the intention of bringing a fresh, creative approach to an age-old craft. Lettercutting and figurative carving form an important part of their portfolio.

The first item commissioned was the font. Ancaster Hard White limestone was chosen as the material for the font with an inscription in a Cumbrian green slate base inlaid into the parquet floor. The tri-lobed plan of the font makes obvious reference to the Holy Trinity while the stylised motif of flowing water could be seen as an allusion to everlasting life. "Our main aim was to give grace and movement to a piece which could merely have been a receptacle on a pedestal," says Zo". On the slate base the lettering takes as its inspiration ripples on the surface of water and the texture of Hebrew calligraphy.

Subsequently, Stoneform were invited back to design a free-standing plinth to support the Holy Tabernacle. And the church has also asked the partners to produce drawings for a planned lectern, altar and statue plinth, also in stone.
